Well,
I have found the reason for the problem
. Found it in the options menu.
options/options/pasting options/ (dialog box)
This dialog box gives you the choice of either pasting to the default layer or your current layer.
Although I am happy that I have found the solution to my problem, I cannot, for the life of me, understand the logic behind this
! Why wouldn't I want to paste into the layer that I am working on
? Well, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it anyway
